The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on April 13, 1919 , in Amritsar. Thousands had gathered peacefully to protest colonial laws. British troops under Reginald Dyer opened fire without warning. The massacre led to the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians. Mahatma Gandhi was deeply moved and intensified the freedom movement. Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood in protest.
