Celebrating the Honourable Homi Nusserwanji Sethna

Dr. Homi Nusserwanji Sethna was one of India’s pioneering nuclear scientists and an architect of the nation’s nuclear programme.He played a leading role in establishing India’s nuclear fuel and heavy-water capabilities.


He was instrumental in the development of the Trombay nuclear complex and India’s nuclear infrastructure.He contributed significantly to the production of plutonium for India’s nuclear programme.As Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, he provided decisive leadership to India’s atomic-energy development.


Under his leadership, India conducted its first nuclear test, Pokhran-I, in 1974.He championed indigenous scientific and technological capabilities for national self-reliance.He also served as Director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, later known as BARC.He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan for his exceptional contribution to the nation.


On his birth anniversary, we honour his scientific vision, leadership, and enduring contribution to a self-reliant India.
