India's late surge at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow stands out as one of the most remarkable comeback stories in recent Indian sporting history. Competing in a streamlined 10-sport programme that excluded core medal factories like shooting, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and hockey, Team India relied on combat sports, weightlifting, and para-athletics to break into the Top 4.

Final Medal Tally Breakdown

India tied host nation Scotland on total medals (39) and gold medals (13), but secured 4th place globally due to a higher silver medal count (17 to 9).

Key Discipline Highlights

1. The Boxing Sweep

Indian boxers delivered an unprecedented performance in Commonwealth Games history. Out of 10 finalists, India converted 7 into Gold medals and 3 into Silver:

  • Women's Gold Champions: Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Choudhary.

  • Men's Gold Champions: Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal.

2. Historic Breakththrough in Judo

Prior to Glasgow, India had never won a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games. That barrier was broken twice in a single edition:

  • Asmita Dey (Women's -48kg) – 🥇 Gold

  • Harsh Singh (Men's -60kg) – 🥇 Gold

  • Yamini Mourya (-57kg Silver) & Unnati Sharma (Bronze) rounded out India's best-ever judo tally.

3. Record Para-Sports & Athletics Showings

  • Para-Athletics Domination: Indian para-athletes delivered 3 gold medals, including dominant 1-2 podium finishes in events like the Men's Shot Put F57 (Soman Rana gold, Shubham Juyal silver) and Women's Shot Put F57 (Sharmila Dhankar gold).

  • Track & Field Stars: Gulveer Singh created history as the first Indian track athlete to win two medals at a single CWG edition (Silver in 10,000m & Bronze in 5,000m). Neeraj Chopra (Javelin) and Murali Sreeshankar (Long Jump) both secured silver medals.

4. Weightlifting Success

  • Mirabai Chanu set the tone early by capturing her 3rd consecutive Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in the Women's 48kg category. The weightlifting squad added 6 silvers and 1 bronze to kickstart India's campaign.
