International Squirrel Appreciation Day, observed every year on January 21, reminds us to value one of nature’s busiest little planners. Started in 2001 by wildlife rehabilitator Christy Hargrove, this day highlights how squirrels quietly support ecosystems by spreading seeds and helping forests regenerate. Beyond their playful jumps and quick movements, squirrels play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, especially during harsh winters when survival is challenging. Taking a moment to observe them, protect their habitats, or offer safe food is a simple way to show appreciation for these often-overlooked contributors to nature.
