Jagjit Singh (born 8 February 1941 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan – died 10 October 2011 in Mumbai) was an Indian composer, singer, and musician widely credited with reviving and popularising the ghazal by making it accessible to the masses.
Born Jagmohan Singh Dhiman, he composed and sang in numerous languages and emphasised meaningful poetry and melody in his music. His modern approach blended traditional Indian styles with contemporary elements, helping bring ghazals from elite circles to mainstream audiences. Often called the “Ghazal King,” he enjoyed a career spanning decades and recorded many albums while also singing for Bollywood films.
