Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak: The Torchbearer of India’s Freedom Movement

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on 23 July 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.He was one of the earliest and most influential leaders of India’s freedom struggle.Tilak inspired millions with his famous slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it.”He played a pivotal role in transforming the Indian National Congress into a mass movement.


He founded the newspapers Kesari (Marathi) and The Mahratta (English) to awaken national consciousness.Tilak popularized the public celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi and Shivaji Jayanti to unite people against British rule.He was a founding member of the Deccan Education Society, promoting modern education in India.His landmark work, “Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Rahasya,” remains a significant contribution to Indian philosophy and nationalism.


Known as the “Father of Indian Unrest,” his fearless leadership inspired countless freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi.On his birth anniversary, we honour his unwavering patriotism, vision, and lasting legacy in India’s journey to independence.
