Makara Sankrānti or simply Makar Sankranti is a special day for celebration in mid-winter. It is a harvest festival in India and Nepal. Generally it is celebrated on the 14 January annually (15 January on a leap year).

The Sankranti is the term that refers the transition of the Sun from one place to another. As this transition coincides with the sun's movement from south to north, the festival is dedicated to the solar deity, Surya, and is observed to mark a new beginning.

Across India, the occasion is celebrated in various name in different communities but all these are simply related to the harvest festivals.
