Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910, dedicated her life to serving the poorest and most vulnerable. She came to India as a young nun and spent years teaching in Kolkata.In 1948, she began working directly among people living in poverty and opened an open-air school.
In 1950, the Missionaries of Charity was founded under her leadership. She established homes for the dying, orphaned children, people affected by leprosy, and the sick.Her charitable mission gradually spread across India and then to countries around the world.
She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1980.After her death in Kolkata on 5 September 1997, her legacy continued through the Missionaries of Charity.She was beatified in 2003 and canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis in 2016.
