Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as Overseas Indian Day, is observed every year on January 9 to honor the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora to India’s growth and development. The date marks Mahatma Gandhi’s historic return to India from South Africa in 1915. Established in 2003 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, PBD serves as a meaningful platform for engagement, dialogue, and collaboration between India and its global community. Since 2015, the convention has been held biennially, with theme-based conferences organized in the intervening years. Hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs in different Indian cities, PBD highlights cultural connection, knowledge exchange, and the pivotal role of overseas Indians in strengthening India’s global presence and progress.
