Poila Boisakh marks the first day of the Bengali calendar, celebrated with joy and cultural pride. It usually falls on April 14 or 15, welcoming a fresh beginning and prosperity.
People wear traditional attire—white and red sarees for women, and kurta-pajama for men. The day begins with cultural processions like Mangal Shobhajatra, symbolizing unity and harmony.
Homes are cleaned and decorated, and people exchange greetings saying “Shubho Noboborsho.” Traditional foods like panta bhat, ilish maach, and sweets are enjoyed with family.
Businesses open new account books, known as Haal Khata, seeking blessings for success. Music, dance, and fairs fill the streets with vibrant energy and celebration.
It is widely celebrated in West Bengal and Bangladesh with equal enthusiasm. The festival reflects Bengali heritage, unity, and the spirit of new beginnings.
