The Lumière brothers’ first major film, La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon (Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory), made in 1895, is widely regarded as the first true motion picture in cinema history. This short film simply shows workers leaving the Lumière factory at the end of the day, yet its realistic depiction of everyday life amazed audiences of the time. It was screened as part of the world’s first public film show on December 28, 1895, at the Grand Café in Paris, where several short real-life “actualités” were presented and admission was charged for the first time. The film demonstrated the extraordinary potential of moving images to document reality, inspire curiosity, and spark emotional connection among viewers. This landmark moment not only introduced the world to the magic of cinema but also laid the foundation for the modern film industry and the art of visual storytelling that continues to evolve today.
