Two generations. Two aviation emergencies. Two people who acted when lives were at risk.
In 1986, 22-year-old Neerja Bhanot played a crucial role during the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73. She alerted the cockpit crew, hid passengers’ passports from the hijackers and helped open emergency exits. Neerja ultimately sacrificed her life while protecting children from gunfire. Her actions helped save more than 350 lives and earned her India’s Ashoka Chakra.
Four decades later, in 2026, Captain Smit Machchhar faced a terrifying emergency aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073. Despite suffering severe injuries and heavy bleeding during an alleged cockpit attack, he fought back and helped create an opportunity for crew members and passengers to intervene. The aircraft was subsequently diverted safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with all 174 people aboard surviving.
Different generations, different crises and different circumstances, but the same instinct to protect lives when faced with unimaginable danger.
