Ustad Amjad Ali Khan — The Timeless Voice of the Sarod

Born on 9 October 1945 in Gwalior, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is a sixth-generation maestro of the Senia Bangash tradition and one of India’s most celebrated sarod virtuosos. Trained by his father, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, he gave his first solo recital at just 12 and went on to build a career spanning more than six decades. He transformed the global appreciation of the sarod through his distinctive playing style and original compositions. He has performed at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center and Sydney Opera House. His honours include the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, along with the Fukuoka Prize and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. He has also received international recognition for his contribution to cultural understanding through music. His compositions and collaborations have carried Indian classical music beyond traditional boundaries, reaching audiences across generations and continents. As a teacher and mentor, he has helped nurture the next generation of musicians, while his sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash continue the family’s musical legacy. His music remains a bridge between India’s rich past, its vibrant present and the generations yet to come. On his birthday, we celebrate not only the maestro, but the enduring legacy of the sarod he continues to enrich.
On this special day, 2PF celebrates not just a maestro, but a living musical legacy that continues to resonate across generations. Happy Birthday, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.
