On July 8, 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama departed from Lisbon with four ships on a mission to discover a direct sea route from Europe to India.
Commanding a crew of around 170 men, he navigated across the Atlantic Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope.
After nearly 11 months at sea, his expedition reached Calicut (present-day Kozhikode, Kerala) on May 20, 1498. This remarkable achievement established the first direct maritime connection between Europe and Asia.
The voyage transformed global trade by opening access to the lucrative spice markets and reducing reliance on overland trade routes. It also strengthened Portugal's position as a leading maritime power. However, the expedition marked the beginning of European colonial expansion in the Indian Ocean, bringing profound political, economic, and cultural changes.
Vasco da Gama's journey remains one of the most influential milestones in the history of exploration and world commerce.
