World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September to recognise the importance of tourism and its contribution to communities, cultures, economies, and sustainable development.The day was established by the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) and has been observed since 1980.27 September was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UN Tourism Statutes in 1970.Tourism connects people across borders, encourages cultural exchange, and helps communities share their heritage, traditions, and stories with the world.It also creates opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, local businesses, and economic development.Today, increasing attention is given to responsible and sustainable tourism that protects natural resources, cultural heritage, and local communities.Tourism also plays an important role in preserving historical places, traditional art, local crafts, cuisines, and cultural practices for future generations.From historic landmarks and vibrant cities to rural communities and natural landscapes, tourism helps us appreciate the incredible diversity of our world.The day reminds us that travelling can be more than discovering new places—it can be an opportunity to learn, respect, connect, and contribute positively.
