Rakesh Sharma is a legendary Indian Air Force pilot and the first Indian to travel to space. He was born on 13 January 1949 and created history on 3 April 1984 when he flew aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 as part of the Intercosmos mission.

During his 8 days in space on the space station Salyut 7, Rakesh Sharma conducted scientific and Earth-observation experiments for India. When asked by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from space, he famously replied: "Saare Jahan Se Achha", a line that became immortal in Indian history.

For his extraordinary achievement, he was awarded Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. Rakesh Sharma remains a symbol of courage, scientific progress, and India's space ambitions, inspiring generations of astronauts and dreamers.
