On 10 September 2018, the upgraded APSARA-U research reactor achieved its First Approach to Criticality at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s nuclear research journey. APSARA-U is an indigenously developed pool-type research reactor that uses low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel and is designed to support advanced research, neutron-based applications, and radioisotope production. It carries forward the legacy of the original APSARA reactor, which was commissioned on 4 August 1956 as Asia’s first nuclear research reactor. The successful commissioning of APSARA-U demonstrated India’s expertise in nuclear engineering, scientific research, and indigenous technology development. It strengthened research capabilities for scientists and contributed to the nation’s long-term technological progress. APSARA-U stands as a symbol of India’s journey from its nuclear past, through its scientific present, toward a more advanced technological future.
