Born on June 28, 1995, in Periavadagampatti, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, Mariyappan’s life changed drastically at the age of five when a devastating accident left him with a permanent disability in his right leg. Despite the immense physical and economic hardships his family faced, he refused to let his circumstances dictate his future. Discovering a passion for the high jump during his school years, he began competing against able-bodied athletes, immediately showcasing a natural, raw talent for the sport.
His life took a pivotal turn when his extraordinary potential was spotted by national para-athletics coach Satyanarayana, who brought him to Bengaluru for professional training.
Scripting History on the Global Stage
Mariyappan’s relentless training culminated in historic performances that placed India firmly on the global para-sports map:
2016 Rio Paralympics (Gold): At just 21 years old, Mariyappan stunned the world in the men's T42 high jump event. Clearing a brilliant height of $1.89\text{ m}$, he clinched the Gold Medal, becoming only the third Indian paralympian to ever win gold.
2020 Tokyo Paralympics (Silver): Proving his consistency among the world's absolute elite, he navigated extreme weather conditions to secure a spectacular Silver Medal in the men's T63 high jump event, clearing $1.86\text{ m}$.
