Dr. Venkatraman Radhakrishnan (18 May 1929 – 3 March 2011) was one of India’s most distinguished radio astronomers and astrophysicists. He made pioneering contributions to the study of pulsars, neutron stars, and the interstellar medium.
His research helped reveal the polarization properties of pulsar radiation, advancing our understanding of these fascinating cosmic objects. He served as Director of the Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru from 1972 to 1994. Under his leadership, the institute became a globally respected center for astrophysics research.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1972, one of the highest honors in science. Dr. Radhakrishnan also received the prestigious Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 1976. He was awarded the Grote Reber Medal for his outstanding work in radio astronomy.
Admired for his brilliance and humility, he inspired generations of scientists in India and around the world. His legacy continues to shine in the exploration of the universe.
