Chandrayaan-3’s Lunar Orbit Insertion: A Historic Milestone in India’s Lunar Mission

On 5 August 2023, ISRO achieved a major milestone as Chandrayaan-3 successfully entered the Moon’s orbit. The spacecraft was captured by the Moon’s gravitational field after a precisely executed Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver. This critical retro-burning operation slowed the spacecraft and placed it into a stable lunar orbit. 

The achievement demonstrated ISRO’s exceptional precision in navigation, orbital calculations, and deep-space mission control. Lunar orbit insertion is one of the most challenging phases of any lunar mission, requiring perfect timing and accuracy. The successful maneuver confirmed that Chandrayaan-3 was functioning normally and progressing exactly as planned. 

This milestone paved the way for a series of orbit reduction maneuvers that gradually brought the spacecraft closer to the lunar surface.
