Remembering Ernest Rutherford — The Father of Nuclear Physics

The extraordinary legacy of Ernest Rutherford, one of the greatest minds in the history of science. Born on 30 August 1871, Rutherford revolutionised our understanding of the atom and laid the foundations of modern nuclear physics. 

His pioneering work identified and distinguished alpha and beta radiation and advanced the understanding of radioactive decay. His famous gold foil experiment led to the discovery of the atomic nucleus, revealing that most of an atom is empty space. He later demonstrated that alpha particles are helium nuclei and made pioneering contributions to nuclear transformations. In 1908, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his investigations into radioactive substances and the disintegration of elements.
