In the age of data-driven decisions, machine learning, and complex analytics, it is easy to forget that India’s relationship with data began long before the digital boom. Every year on June 29, India observes National Statistics Day to celebrate the vital role that statistics plays in socio-economic planning, policy formulation, and national development.

The date was chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (born June 29, 1893), who is globally revered as the "Father of Indian Statistics."

The Birth of National Statistics Day

The Government of India officially designated June 29 as National Statistics Day in 2007 to recognize Mahalanobis's invaluable contributions to statistical science and economic planning. The core objective of the day is to sensitize the public, especially the younger generation, about how data and statistics help draw meaningful conclusions for public welfare and national progress.

The Monolithic Legacy of P.C. Mahalanobis

Professor Mahalanobis didn't just study statistics; he institutionalized it, proving that numbers could be used as a powerful tool for nation-building.

  • Founding the ISI (1931): Mahalanobis founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata in 1931. What started as a small laboratory in Presidency College transformed into a world-renowned premier institution for statistical research, education, and application.

  • Architect of the Second Five-Year Plan: As a key member of the first Planning Commission of independent India, he designed the Mahalanobis Model. This mathematical framework prioritized heavy mechanics and rapid industrialization, serving as the blueprint for the Second Five-Year Plan (1956–1961) to make India self-reliant.

  • The Mahalanobis Distance: In the realm of pure data science, he devised the Mahalanobis Distance ($D^2$). This widely used statistical measure calculates the distance between a data point and a distribution. Today, it remains a foundational metric in multivariate data analysis, cluster analysis, and machine learning classification algorithms.

Focusing on Current Priorities: Annual Themes

Rather than treating the day as a historical reflection, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) celebrates National Statistics Day with a specific, forward-looking annual theme. These themes align with current national priorities—such as sustainable development goals, digital data ecosystems, or health metrics—to promote evidence-based policymaking and improve public awareness.

From the foundational corridors of the ISI in Kolkata to the predictive algorithms running modern industries, Mahalanobis's vision reminds us that data is the ultimate compass for a developing nation.
