Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and mathematician who transformed our understanding of the universe. By improving the telescope, he discovered the moons of Jupiter and strongly supported the heliocentric theory proposed by Copernicus. His courage to stand by scientific truth, even when opposed by powerful authorities, made him a pioneer of modern science and a symbol of intellectual bravery.
