World Tsunami Awareness Day – Building a Safer and Resilient Future

Observed every year on 5th November, World Tsunami Awareness Day highlights the importance of preparedness, awareness and disaster risk reduction. Established by the United Nations in 2015, this day encourages communities across the world to understand the dangers of tsunamis and take preventive measures. Tsunamis are powerful ocean waves generally caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides. They can cause widespread destruction, affecting lives, livelihoods and coastal ecosystems. The day promotes early warning systems, evacuation planning and community education to reduce disaster risks. It also emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and sharing knowledge to protect vulnerable coastal populations. Learning to recognize natural warning signs and moving to higher ground can save lives. Governments, organizations and individuals all have an important role in building disaster-resilient communities. Awareness and preparedness are our strongest tools against natural disasters.
Let us spread knowledge, encourage preparedness and work towards a safer future for everyone.
