Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy was born on 2 August 1861 and is celebrated as the father of modern Indian chemistry. He founded Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, India’s first pharmaceutical company. His pioneering research on mercurous nitrite earned international recognition.


He was a distinguished professor at Presidency College, Kolkata, inspiring generations of scientists. Roy strongly believed that scientific education should contribute to national development. He promoted indigenous industries and self-reliance during the freedom movement.


His book “A History of Hindu Chemistry” remains an important contribution to the history of science. He was known for his humility, philanthropy, and dedication to education.
