Before the era of satellites and real-time telemetry, sailors and explorers relied entirely on the mechanical compass. But there was a massive catch: a compass needle doesn't point to the true geographic North Pole. It aligns with the Earth's shifting magnetic field.

For centuries, navigating the high seas meant guessing the "magnetic declination"—the error angle between true north and magnetic north.

By leading an expedition directly to the point where a magnetic needle pointed straight down at a 90 degree angle, Ross achieved a monumental milestone. He didn't just find a spot on a map; he provided the empirical data points needed to vastly improve global navigation models.


The Drift Is Real: A Dynamic System

One of the most fascinating aspects of Ross's discovery is that his coordinates were temporary. Unlike the fixed geographic poles, the magnetic poles are constantly drifting due to the movement of liquid iron in the Earth’s outer core.

  • Then vs. Now: When Ross located it in 1831, the pole was firmly in the Canadian Arctic. Over the last two centuries, it has been migrating northwest toward Siberia at an accelerating pace.
