Isaac Roberts FRS (1829–1904) was a Welsh engineer and successful businessman who made a lasting mark on astronomy as a pioneering amateur astronomer. He is best remembered for his groundbreaking work in astrophotography, especially his early and detailed photographs of nebulae and star clusters.
At a time when astronomy relied heavily on visual observation, Roberts used long-exposure photography to reveal the true structure of celestial objects—most famously capturing the Andromeda Nebula, helping to advance the understanding of the universe beyond what the naked eye could see. His work bridged engineering skill with scientific curiosity, earning him recognition as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and securing his place in astronomical history.
