ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

26 September marks the birth anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, born in 1820 in Birsingha, Bengal.A renowned educator, scholar, writer, and social reformer, he became one of the prominent figures of the Bengal Renaissance.He dedicated his life to expanding education, particularly women’s education, and worked to make learning more accessible.He played a leading role in the campaign for widow remarriage, contributing to the passage of the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act in 1856.He also opposed social practices such as child marriage and polygamy and advocated greater dignity and opportunities for women.Vidyasagar made lasting contributions to Bengali language and education, simplifying the Bengali alphabet and writing the influential primer Barna Parichay.His scholarship earned him the title “Vidyasagar,” meaning “Ocean of Knowledge.”Through education, literature, and social reform, he left a legacy that continues to influence Bengali culture and Indian society.His life stands as a reminder of how knowledge, compassion, courage, and social responsibility can create meaningful change.
