Mangal Pandey: The Revolutionary Who Ignited India’s First War of Independence

On July 19, we pay tribute to the birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter, Mangal Pandey. Born in 1827 in Nagwa, present-day Uttar Pradesh, he became a symbol of courage and patriotism.


Serving as a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry, he stood against British oppression. His fearless revolt at Barrackpore on March 29, 1857, inspired countless Indians to rise against colonial rule. His defiance became the spark that ignited the Revolt of 1857, India’s First War of Independence.
